About Reading

Beyond the Binding pairs books with experiences—that's what makes us special! We hope you'll read (or at least start) each selection. Not every book will be your cup of tea, and that's okay—come share what you loved or didn't. We don't moderate for spoilers, so assume full book discussions.

If reading isn't really your thing, there are wonderful activity-focused Meetup groups that might be a better fit!

Who Can Join

Age requirement: All members must be 21+ to ensure we can visit all venues and discuss books with mature themes.

Bringing a friend: First-time guests are welcome! After that, please have them create their own Meetup profile and RSVP independently since spots are limited.

Profile Photos

Please use a clear, recent photo of yourself (not your pet, a sunset, or an abstract image). This helps everyone recognize each other at meetups and creates a more personal, welcoming atmosphere.

 

Money Matters

What you'll pay for:

• Event tickets (purchased directly from venues—links provided)

• The book (usually $4-17 used)

• Your meal/drinks at restaurants

• Transportation and parking

Small event fees: Occasionally we negotiate group discounts that require prepayment to the club via Venmo (include your Meetup name and event date in notes).

Supporting the club: Running Beyond the Binding costs about $800/year (Meetup fees, website hosting, coordination time). If you'd like to chip in, we offer voluntary annual ($25), monthly ($3), or one-time donations via Venmo. This is completely optional and doesn't give anyone special privileges—we just appreciate the support!

 

Refunds & Cancellations

Venue tickets: Since you purchase directly from theaters, restaurants, and activity providers, refunds must be requested through them. We have no control over their policies.

Prepaid group tickets: Refunds via Venmo are possible if you cancel 7+ days ahead AND someone takes your spot. Last-minute cancellations can't be refunded. All membership donations are non-refundable.

 

Community Guidelines

We're building a warm, inclusive community. Here's what that looks like:

• Be kind and open-minded – Healthy debate is great; personal attacks aren't

• Respect everyone – No discrimination, harassment, bullying, or unwanted contact

• Embrace different perspectives – Part of the joy is seeing how others experience the same story

• Keep it book-focused – We avoid political debates to keep conversations centered on literature and our shared experiences

• Respect boundaries – No means no, always

If something feels off: Please let Heather know immediately. Serious violations may result in removal from events or the group.

 

Alcohol & Responsible Behavior

Some events involve venues serving alcohol or BYOB options. Please drink responsibly and arrange safe transportation. Disruptive behavior due to intoxication will result in removal from the event.

We ask that members refrain from using recreational substances at events, including at member homes, to maintain a comfortable environment for everyone and protect our volunteer hosts.

 

Photos & Event Memories

We love capturing memories! By attending events, you're comfortable with photos being taken and shared within the group on Meetup, Facebook or Instagram.

 

Transportation

Carpooling is wonderful! Any arrangements are between individual members—the club doesn't provide or take responsibility for transportation.

 

Participation & Liability

By attending events, you participate at your own risk and agree to hold Beyond the Binding, its organizers, and members harmless from any claims or liability. We're all responsible adults doing fun things together—please take care of yourself!

Events can fill quickly! Make sure your Meetup settings are optimized:

• Enable email notifications for new events and time changes

• Download the Meetup app for real-time updates

• Check the group page regularly
